The Level 1 ultrasound technologist will take numerous images of your uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, and developing baby. A perinatologist or radiologist carefully examines the photographs. Your doctor or another healthcare provider will then be informed of the findings. The doctor may decide occasionally that performing a Level 2 ultrasound, which is a more thorough ultrasound, would be beneficial. You will be instructed to undergo a Level 2 ultrasound if certain structures were difficult to spot during the initial ultrasound or if there are other concerns. This does not necessary imply that your pregnancy or your unborn child have a problem. The procedure for Level 2 ultrasounds is often the same as for Level 1 ultrasounds.
