Between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy, a thorough anatomy ultrasound is advised.1 The objective of this imaging, often referred to as a level 2 ultrasound, anatomy scan, or anomaly scan, is for your provider to evaluate the health and development of your infant. A level 2 ultrasound looks more closely at the various sections of the baby's body than the earlier level 1 ultrasound, which are used to measure the baby and record its location. The baby's entire body, including the brain, heart, and other organs, will often be examined. Additionally, the amniotic fluid and umbilical cord levels will be examined. Instead of a transvaginal ultrasound like those performed earlier in pregnancy, this one is often transabdominal. This test is unlike any other conducted in early pregnancy, and can be a nerve-wracking experience for pregnant parents. But it doesn't have to be with a little bit of planning and information. You will be asked to lie down on the exam table by the ultrasound technician, or in some situations, your doctor, in order to start the scan. The ultrasonic gel will then be applied to your tummy and warmed for your comfort.
